It is very difficult for widows (or any other single mother) to financially support themselves if they have children to look after. This problem is aggravated in countries which do not offer any support to them. UWT Widow Sponsorships aim to ameliorate their difficulties by financial aid to cover their basic needs. Costs vary between locations but are typically between £30-40 a month.

The Islamic ruling is that after the husband, the responsibility of her assistance and maintenance falls on the son, father, and brother respectively. Failing that for whatever reason the responsibility falls on the community around her. Failing that the responsibility is on the Muslim community in general.

Iraq

The US invasion killed over 1 million Iraqis, more than 1 million women were widowed, over 4 million people displaced inside and outside Iraq, over 5 million children orphaned and over 65% left unemployed.

The current situation is a humanitarian catastrophe - tens of thousands of Iraqis including millions of children are now at risk of starving if adequate food is not delivered. Between 70% and 80% of the population are dependent on food ration for survival while the World Food Program has stopped distribution of ration. 80% of the Iraq population is at immediate risk of hunger and malnutrition while the prices of food and essentials has risen to the extent that it is beyond the reach of the common and women headed families with orphans are suffering the most.

The price for food per family is set for £ 70 per month.

Chechnya

Although the conflict in Chechnya has officially ended a few years ago, the repercussions of war still resonate throughout the republic as many people are still left with a legacy of food insecurity, lack of income and little hope for sustainable livelihoods.

The unemployment rate has reached its peak of over 80% with mostly female headed household with the death of the husband due to the armed conflict struggling to feed their children. In rural and mountainous areas women do not have access to any income-generating activities such as agricultural.

The price for each widow sponsorship is set for £ 35 a month.
