Sept 13, 2008: In the Muslim majority State of Jammu and Kashmir the incidence of poverty is higher among Muslims and higher number of families below the poverty line is from the Muslim majority districts.

This has been revealed by the BPL survey released by the Directorate of Economics and Statistic few days ago.

Kashmir Valley is located past the Pir Panjal mountain range along the sensitive boundary line with Pakistan, Jammu is located beanth the mountains and closer to the plains, while Ladakh shares many topographical features with neighboring Tibet. The population of the entire state is about 10 million, with approximately 5.5 million people in Kashmir Valley.

The official civilian death toll in the conflict is 20,000. Kashmiri human rights organizations claim that 70,000 people have died during the conflict and 8,000 have disappeared.
