On 20th March 2013 in Meiktila city, violent Buddhist mobs began destroying the property, shops, masjids and houses of Muslims.

The death toll is over 50. This includes 11 women, 28 madrassah students (many of whom were Huffadh) and 5 teachers of the Qur'an.

The situation is extremely tense. Thousands of Muslims have taken refuge in sports stadiums and schools. They need urgent help.

Ummah Welfare Trust has already responded to this new round of troubles and is working with local communities to deliver aid to the families that have been affected.

Ummah Welfare Trust is not launching a new appeal; rather it is utilising existing funds to extend relief efforts to the Meiktila region. Cash grants are currently being administered to families affected by the violence.

The charity will continue monitoring the situation closely. It calls on the government of Burma and all communities to make every effort towards restoring peace and normality.

Ummah Welfare Trust requests its donors to sincerely pray for the oppressed Muslims in Burma.
