    Burma Cyclone Appeal

The Cyclone Nargis in Burma has left over 22,000 people dead, 40,000 people missing and millions homeless. Ummah Welfare Trust (UWT) has launched an Emergency Appeal for the victims who await aid from NGOs and Global Aid Agencies. UWT has allocated an initial £100,000 and targets to raise Half a Million Pounds.

UWT has been operating in Burma for over three years and, with fieldworkers on the ground, is in a unique position to deliver Emergency Aid. The first phase of the program has started on the ground with the initial assessment and food packets, water purification tablets and temporary shelter kits will be provided in the next two days. Further funds are required to initiate medium term and long term rehabilitative projects.

UWT Trustee Iqbal Rawat, of Burmese ethnicity, has visited the region a few times to overlook projects. He said in a statement, 'I intend to fly out in the next few days to overlook the relief efforts. From previous visits, the Burmese People are generally poor and a global effort will be required to regenerate the economy and assist the victims.'

Shaykh Muhammad Ahmad, CEO of UWT said, 'Once again, a calamity has befallen the Burmese people. It is a collective responsibility upon us all to assist our fellow brothers and sisters in Burma. As with all Emergency Crises, it is necessary to consider the long term consequences of the cyclone. Phase two of our plan is to rebuild homes, re-establish water systems and provide material for those who have lost their means of sustenance.”
