More than
10,000 people feared killed and 8.87 lakhs injured, about 2.42
lakhs livestock deaths, 23,000 acres of crops destroyed (as of
November 19th 2007) as the savage storm battered the coastal
areas of Bangladesh on Thursday, November 15th 2007 rendering
millions of families homeless. According to the official source
of the food and disaster ministry, the death toll and the
homeless’ are mounting as more information is being received
from the affected areas. Thousands of children have lost their
parents and passing their days under the open sky with no food,
no parents, no shelter or many not even having any relatives.
Many corpses are found floating in the rivers. In many affected
areas people buried the dead bodies without Cafon. Crisis of
drinking water, inadequate relief, diarrhoea, hunger are
spreading everywhere. Due to them having to stay out under the
open sky, thousands of survivors are now begging for a glass of
water, forgetting about the inadequate relief and shelter.
The devastating
cyclone triggered more than 15-20 foot high tidal surge that
inundated acres of land in coastal districts, snapping
communication links, caused disruption at airports, forced
Chittagong and Mongla ports to suspend their operation, while
also cutting off roads and railway networks in the affected
areas. Telecommunication and internet services across the
country have almost foundered as the cyclone has caused
disruption in international communication. The storm and tidal
surge ravaged the paddy field and production areas. More than
1,000,000 houses completely destroyed and more than 5,000,000
houses destroyed partially. By early next day (Friday) the storm
turned into a tropical storm and moved well inland north-east of
Dhaka and the country experienced the worst ever power blackout
following the country’s all power units resulting the collapse
of the National Power Grid.
