Leicester University's Islamic Society raised £1,000 to help victims

President Zakariya Khan said: "In an era where students are seen to be broke and in debt, the generosity shown is a clear sign that we, as a student community, still care and feel for those who have lost everything in the earthquake."

The cash went to the Ummah Welfare Trust, a UK charity which helps people in crisis around the world.
