| In June 2007, torrential rains and gale-force
winds hit Karachi killing over 200 people. Cyclone Yemyin struck
bringing with it nothing but destruction and despair, resulting in
over two million people becoming homeless. UWT immediately
dispatched a team of field workers to one of the worst-hit areas in
Karachi. The team provided food, water, makeshift tents, clothing
and medicine to countless needy people. Two
years after the devastating earthquake which claimed the lives of
approximately 78,000 people, the effects are still visible.
The following projects have been carried out
during 2006/2007:
• To date, UWT has constructed 26 Masaajid in the
most affected areas.
• UWT has also carried out food distribution in 10 different areas
affected by the earthquake; approximately 1,650 families have
benefited.
• Yearly Ramadhan, Iftar & Qurbani Programs.
• 719 Orphan Sponsorships.
• Cataract Aid Programs set up in four areas benefiting 3,545
people.
• The Ummah Children Academy (UCA) is open and is currently catering
for 187 orphans, providing them with free education and
accommodation.
• The Orphanage in Gilgit caters for 90 boys and girls providing
them education up to primary level.
• Four month sewing machine classes, and a sewing machine each, have
benefited 290 women in Karachi. |
