| Since the first Chechen War in 1994 the people of
Chechnya have been suffering silently. There has been no recent
population census of Chechnya but it is believed that there are now
less than 600,000 Chechens remaining in the world and a large number
of them are women, children and the elderly. Many Chechens are now
residing in neighbouring countries such as Ingushetia, Dagestan and
Azerbaijan as refugees. In a recent visit to Azerbaijan by our
representatives, the real facts regarding their plight and desperate
situation was uncovered. There are over 3,500 official Chechen
refugees in Azerbaijan, in need of food and shelter.
Over the last 3 years UWT has been fortunate to
care for approximately 150 Chechen orphans from the most deserving families
on behalf of our donors. |
