| Charity Projects in
Albania |
| Albania is one of the poorest countries in
Europe. The main target of the communists, who began their
iron-fisted rule in 1944, was the total destruction of religion. In
1945, all waqf properties were nationalised and hundreds of ‘Ulamaa,
accused of collaboration, were executed. Religious life was governed
by strict regulations. Muftis were appointed by the state, prayers
were only to be said in Albanian, and only those mosques remained
open that were absolutely necessary for community use. Despite these
tribulations, many Albanian Muslims persevered and held steadfast
onto the rope of Islam. |
